Over the years I have observed that the degree of severity of trauma on a person's life is directly related to the degree that it makes us feel helpless. The less we understand the why, what, and how something happened, the greater the effect the event has on our lives. This is one reason that childhood trauma is so powerful because we are too young to understand. This feeling of helplessness is often the source of anxiety and depression and feels absolutely paralyzing.
